A Cult? No

Unity Spiritual Center of Sheboygan: A Place for Everyone

A few months ago, during a New Membership class at Unity, a participant shared that a minister from another local church had discouraged her from exploring Unity, calling it a “cult.” Hearing this was disheartening, as it couldn’t be further from the truth. Unity is not a cult; it is a spiritual community built on love, acceptance, and empowerment.

So, let’s clarify what Unity is—and what it is not.

What Unity is Not:

A cult is often described as a group with extreme or secretive practices, excessive admiration for leaders, or devotion to a particular figure. That’s not Unity. Similarly, “the occult” refers to hidden or paranormal knowledge. Again, this is not what we practice.

What Unity Is:

We are a spiritual community that embraces all spiritual paths and faith traditions. At Unity, we focus on practical spirituality—principles that uplift, empower, and inspire positive change in our lives and in the world.

Unity is a place where all are welcome, regardless of background, race, or sexual orientation. We believe in honoring the divine within each of us and trust that the Universe (or God, Spirit, Higher Power—however you define it) supports the highest good for all.

At our core, we teach that thoughts create experiences—and that by shifting our thoughts, we can transform our lives.

Understanding New Thought

Unity is part of a broader spiritual philosophy called New Thought. This movement is rooted in universal truths found in the teachings of great spiritual leaders like Ralph Waldo Emerson. New Thought emphasizes Oneness: the idea that the Divine is both within us and all around us.

Unlike "New Age," New Thought draws upon ancient spiritual wisdom, integrating both Eastern and Western perspectives. It’s inclusive, welcoming people from all spiritual traditions—Christianity, Judaism, Buddhism, Islam, Hinduism, and beyond.

Our Approach to Sacred Texts

Unity values the Bible as one among many sacred scriptures inspired by Divine revelation. We believe spiritual wisdom can be found in various texts across the world’s faiths, offering insights for personal growth and spiritual freedom.

The Power of Affirmative Prayer

Prayer is central to our practice, but at Unity, we take a unique approach called affirmative prayer. This uplifting method is about aligning with the indwelling Divine presence and welcoming blessings into our lives. It’s not about asking for things to happen—it’s about recognizing the good that already exists and allowing it to manifest.

Through affirmative prayer, we open ourselves to greater levels of health, love, abundance, and peace.
